JOURNALISTES, POLITICIENS ET CHERCHEURS EXPRIMENT LEUR INDIGNATION QUANT AU TRAITEMENT INJUSTE RÉSERVÉ À TARIQ RAMADAN PAR LES AUTORITÉS JUDICIAIRES FRANÇAISES
(14 juin 2018) – Tariq Ramadan, intellectuel et professeur respecté de l’université d’Oxford, a été placé en détention provisoire dans une prison française et privé de liberté sous caution suite à des allégations de viol qu’il nie avec véhémence.
Incarcéré depuis plus de quatre mois, Tariq Ramadan s’est vu refuser un traitement médical approprié d’une affection médicale antérieure grave et s’est vu refuser l’accès à son dossier judiciaire complet.
Les magistrats français semblent ignorer les diagnostics de neuf médecins stipulant que le professeur Ramadan souffre d’une sclérose en plaques, y compris l’avis de l’autorité médicale en chef de la prison qui a confirmé que son état de santé n’était pas compatible avec le maintien en incarcération.
En réponse, un appel international émis par des journalistes, des politiciens, des universitaires et des chercheurs qui s’expriment dans une lettre ouverte. Parmi les signataires : l’auteure anglaise Karen Armstrong; le philosophe canadien Charles Taylor; le cinéaste britannique Ken Loach; Dr Amina Wadud de Berkeley; le journaliste britannique Peter Oborne; le professeur John Esposito de l’université de Georgetown et l’universitaire Hamza Yusuf.
« Nous souhaitons rappeler au pays qui a affirmé l’inaliénabilité des droits de l’Homme et l’égalité; l’importance de respecter les principes qui garantissent l’intégrité de la justice française telle que la présomption d’innocence. »
La lettre exprime également une profonde inquiétude quant au traitement inhumain infligé à Tariq Ramadan par la justice française.

Un appel international pour exiger une procédure équitable pour Tariq Ramadan. Après quatre mois de détention provisoire, la dernière demande pour une remise en liberté sous caution de Tariq Ramadan a de nouveau été refusée.
En tant que personnalités, chercheurs et politiciens du monde entier, nous écrivons pour exiger une procédure équitable pour le professeur Tariq Ramadan, incarcéré depuis le 2 février dans une prison française.
Ce n’est pas à nous de juger de la culpabilité ou de l’innocence du professeur Ramadan. Nous reconnaissons pleinement les droits des plaignantes, à ce que leur cause soit entendue sans préjudice ou atteinte à leur honneur. Mais nous souhaitons rappeler au pays qui a affirmé l’inaliénabilité des droits de l’Homme et l’égalité; l’importance du respect des principes qui garantissent l’intégrité de la justice française.
Ainsi, nous posons la question: Pourquoi M. Ramadan a-t-il été privé de liberté sous caution lors de l’enquête préliminaire? Ceci bien qu’il se soit rendu volontairement à l’interrogatoire et ait donné toutes les garanties requises?
Mr. Ramadan a-t-il bénéficié de l’égalité de traitement tant appréciée par la France, alors que des personnalités politiques de haut rang accusées de faits similaires continuent de bénéficier de leur liberté de mouvement?
Existe-t-il une forme de justice pour les musulmans en France et une autre pour tous les autres?
Qu’est-ce qui justifie sa mise en isolement, les droits limités de visites familiales, le refus d’accès à son dossier judiciaire et donc aux moyens nécessaires pour préparer sa défense?
Les magistrats peuvent-ils permettre les fuites d’informations de manière sélective en toute impunité? Est-ce une habitude en France que des personnalités politiques de haut rang dénigrent publiquement une personne en attente de procès?
En bref, nous posons respectueusement la question: Mr Ramadan bénéficie-t-il d’une procédure judiciaire juste et équitable, dans laquelle il est présumé innocent jusqu’à preuve du contraire?
Nous demandons donc l’application et le respect d’une justice égalitaire et impartiale.
Nous tenons également à faire part de notre profonde préoccupation pour la dignité et le traitement humain de tous les prisonniers.
Les magistrats français semblent ignorer les diagnostics de neuf médecins qui stipulent que Mr. Ramadan souffre d’une sclérose en plaques, y compris l’avis de l’autorité médicale en chef de la prison qui a confirmé que son état de santé n’était pas compatible avec le maintien en détention.
Alors que M. Ramadan souffre de sclérose en plaques et de complications neurologiques, il ne bénéficie toujours pas d’un traitement médical approprié.
Nous comprenons que la défense a fait appel à la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme face aux souffrances infligées au professeur par la justice française.

OUTRAGE AT TARIQ RAMADAN’S UNJUST TREATMENT
JOURNALISTS, ACADEMICS, FILMMAKERS EXPRESS OUTRAGE AT TARIQ RAMADAN’S UNJUST TREATMENT BY FRENCH JUDICIARY
(June 14, 2018) – Respected Oxford University Professor and public intellectual Tariq Ramadan has been held in preventative detention in a French prison and denied bail following allegations of rape to which he vehemently denies.
Incarcerated for over four months, Tariq Ramadan was denied appropriate treatment for a serious pre-existing medical condition and denied access to his full legal file.
French magistrates appeared to ignore the diagnoses of nine physicians that Professor Ramadan suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, including the chief prison medical authority, who confirmed that his state of health is not compatible with continued incarceration.
In response, a worldwide appeal of journalists, politicians, scholars and academics are speaking out in an open letter. Signatories include English author Karen Armstrong, Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor, UK filmmaker Ken Loach, Dr Amina Wadud from Berkeley, UK journalist Peter Oborne, Professor John Esposito from Georgetown University, scholar Hamza Yusuf, among many others.
“We wish to remind the country that affirmed the inalienability of human rights and equality, the importance of respecting principles that ensure the integrity of French justice.”
The letter also expresses deep concern with the inhuman treatment that Tariq Ramadan has been subject to at the hands of French justice.

OPEN LETTER: A WORLDWIDE APPEAL FOR DUE PROCESS FOR TARIQ RAMADAN
A Worldwide Appeal for Due Process for Tariq Ramadan. After four months of pre-trial detention, Tariq Ramadan’s last appeal for bail has again been denied.
As scholars and politicians from around the world, we write to demand due process for Professor Tariq Ramadan, incarcerated since February 2nd in a French prison.
It is not for us to judge Tariq Ramadan’s guilt or innocence. We fully recognize the rights of the plaintiffs to have their case heard without prejudice and without injury to their honour. But we wish to remind the country that has affirmed the inalienability of human rights and equality of the importance of respect for the principles that ensure the integrity of French justice.
We ask: Why has Mr. Ramadan been denied bail at the preliminary investigative stage although he willingly came for questioning and has given all required guarantees?
Has Mr. Ramadan been granted the equal treatment so prized by France when high-ranking political figures accused of similar offenses continue to enjoy full freedom of movement?
Is there one form of justice for Muslims in France and another for everyone else?
What justifies solitary confinement, limited family visitation rights, the denial of access to his case file and thus to the necessary means of preparing his defense?
Can prosecutors selectively leak information with impunity? Is it standard procedure in France for high-ranking political figures to publicly denigrate someone awaiting a trial?
In short, we respectfully ask, has Mr. Ramadan benefitted from a fair and equitable legal process, one in which he is presumed innocent until proven guilty?
These are straightforward questions of equal justice. To them we add deep concern for the dignity and humane treatment of all prisoners.

Even though Mr. Ramadan suffers from multiple sclerosis and further neurological complications, proper medical treatment has not been provided.
We understand that the defense has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights against undue suffering he has undergone at the hands of the French justice.
